International Women’s Day events around the Illawarra in March
Published by the Illawarra Mercury – MARCH 8 2019
A world of wonderful women are being celebrated everywhere, with many events scheduled across the Illawarra this march to coincide with International Women’s Day.
Wollongong’s Project Contemporary Artspace on Burelli street is running a two-week sculpture exhibition by local artists.
Organised by Sue Bessell, 61 works celebrate the artists living full and productive lives, their creative ability and individual commitment to their art practice.
Artists have used diverse media; collage, textiles, printmaking, drawing, installation, sculpture, construction, artist books, photography and painting.
Kiama’s Little Blowhole Art Bar is hosting the “Strong Woman” exhibition for the month of March, inspired by the social media campaign “Project Strong Woman”.
All artworks will be for sale at the exhibition, with 50 per cent of the proceeds donated to SAHSSI, a specialist domestic violence and homelessness service for women and children in the Illawarra/Shoalhaven District.
The Wollongong Art Gallery is hosting an exhibition of stories and memorabilia commemorating the city IWD demonstration marches in 1938 and 1979, and their legacy of diverse yet united sisterhood.
Running until June 2, the exhibition comprises the work of artist research working with nine regional NSW archives.
A previous IWD Illawarra Scholarship winner, artist Libby Bloxham, is presenting her “We Can Fly” exhibition at The Village – a new exhibition space at 160 Shellharbour Road in Port Kembla.
The official opening is Saturday March 9, 6pm. It will run until March 23.
On Sunday, the Wollongong Town Hall will stream three headline sessions and a backstage Q&A from the All About Women festival at the Sydney Opera House.
Sessions include a panel discussion of the #MeToo movement; Feminism in the Arab World; and Leading While Female – a discussion with Julie Bishop (pictured), Linda Burney, Sarah Hanson-Young and Julia Banks. For more details visit: www.merrigong.com.au
